Berenice Abbott + Espacio Miró – General Ticket

Berenice Abbott

From June 1st to August 25th, 2019

Berenice Abbott is undoubtedly one of the photographers who first effectively portrayed New York. Through her lens the city becomes a living being: shops, bridges, streets, interiors, emblematic buildings in construction. The same views that can still be seen today if you take a night tour of the highway around Manhattan.

This exhibit centers on the very idea of modernity, something which invades all of Abbott’s work. In the first section this modernity is presented through portraits of radical personalities, people who transformed the world from the middle of the 1920s. The second section gathers together a stunning depiction of New York, including the relationship and fascination Abbott had with Atget. The third and final section revolves around her scientific pictures, which she started to take around the 1940s, forming part of the Physical Science Study Committee at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, whose archives safeguard a large number of these types of images of physical phenomena. In these photos, the city lights, the contrasts of New York, appear monumental, and bring to a close the fascinating journey that Berenice Abbott’s photographs offer to us.

The show, organized by Fundación MAPFRE and the Musée Granet de Aix-en- Provence, is dedicated to these two essential figures in the history of art, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Francis Picabia (1879-1953), who have never before been associated with each other in this way. The objective is to trace the history of art through some of the most significant aesthetic movements such as Cubism, Dadaism, Classicism, Machinism and Abstraction, among others, and to show the links between them, such as the love for all things Spanish and the leading role of women.

The exhibition, mainly comprising paintings and graphic art, is complemented with some archive documents (magazines, letters and photographs) that demonstrate the dialogue established between the work of the two artists. They both had Spanish origins they shared creative interests, artistic themes and a historical context in which they were both decisive in the evolution of the avant-garde movement. Above all, however, they shared the desire to defy the pictorial conventions established by the historiography of art. For both them of in the same measure, “assassinating painting” was the path they both took to rejuvenate it.
