Richard Learoyd – General Ticket

Richard Learoyd

The silence of the obscure chamber

From June 5th to September 8th, 2019

Richard Learoyd (Nelson, United Kingdom, 1966) is one of the most well-known contemporary photographers of our times. His work, which establishes a dialog with both painting and the origins of photography, is rooted in the past in terms of the themes he addresses and the techniques he employs.
He makes his pictures with a camera obscura he has built himself. The portraits taken by means of this process give rise to life-sized photographs. This conveys the direct presence of the person being depicted and enables us to look at them in an unusually up close way. His themes cover the classic genres of traditional painting: portrait, landscape and still life.

His color photographs have no negatives, meaning that each one of them is unique. Although the photographer could take the photo again, it would never be exactly the same.

This exhibition, curated by Sandra S. Phillips, covers the last 10 years of the artist’s production. It is a vast retrospective of his photography career and includes 51 works from important public and private collections as well as from the photographer’s own studio. The exhibition is open to the public at Fundación MAPFRE’s Barcelona and Madrid Exhibition Halls and will be traveling to the Fotomuseum den Haag in The Hague.
