Touching color: the renewal of pastel

From October 3rd to January 5th, 2020

The history of art is not only the story of the visual practices of artists and movements, but it is also the study of the techniques and materials they used; this exhibition focuses on one of them, historically classified as more than drawing but less than painting: the pastel. Although the 18th century has always been considered as the golden age of its widespread acceptance and use, it was only in the 19th century that the pastel managed to slowly distinguish itself completely from other techniques such as oil painting. The materials’ qualities (intense colors, soft blurring, quick and easy to work with) united it perfectly to a certain idea of modernity gaining ground at the time.

Touching Color delves into the history of the rebirth of the pastel from an international perspective and showcases its main episodes and leading figures, who were responsible for turning it into an art form in its own right. Eugène Boudin, Odilon Redon, Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet are among the artists who, by promoting this technique thus conferred an innovative status on the use of pastel chalks which lasted throughout the first half of the 20th century and was implicated in the breaking loose from old artistic languages ushered in by the upcoming generation, among others Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, María Blanchard and Theo van Doesburg.
